Broadcast Regulation

Tanzania Regulator Bans Clouds FM And Clouds TV For Contraventions

The Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) had on August 27 issued a broadcast suspension to Clouds FM and TV stations. The seven-day ban will take effect immediately.

According to the TCRA, the stations were banned because they, without due and proper authorisation, broadcast information related to electoral statistics not approved by the country's National Electoral Commission. It says that "the Clouds TV and Clouds FM violated the Code on political party elections broadcasting act of 2015 in their '360' and 'Power Breakfast' morning programmes on Wednesday, August 26".

Part of the sanctions also requires Clouds TV and Clouds FM to issue a public apology and retract of the story. TCRA urges all broadcast and media organisations in Tanzania to be mindful of the laws and regulations impacting their operations, so they do not contravene these. Earlier this month, it was reported that TCRA banned a radio programme from airing because it allegedly promotes immorality in society.
