Tanzania: TCRA Moves To Ban Online TV Station Over "Misleading News"
The broadcasting regulator in Tanzania - the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authorities (TCRA) has suspended a local internet-based TV station for relaying information that the government of Tanzania find inaccurate and misleading.
TCRA's Content Committee alleged that Kwanza Online TV outfit had contravened the country's online content regulations by publishing a statement allegedly from the US embassy on a possible resurgence of the coronavirus outbreak in Dar es Salam - without conducting the required fact-checks with the authorities.
Maria Sarungi-Tsehai, founder and owner of Kwanza Online TV, refuted the regulator's allegations, commenting that "we will keep fighting for our right on this matter". Some industry watchers in Tanzania reckon that the TCRA is beginning to appear as a muzzling of press freedom in the country, following this and a spate of gagging orders issued to other news and media organisations.
