Nigeria: Govt Minister Says Digital Switchover Will Fetch US$1.1Billion

Nigerian Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has said he confidently expects the still-ongoing digital switchover programming to yield more than 1 Billion US dollars into the state treasury's coffers.

The government minister said he believes that just shy of 1 billion US dollars could be generated from the sale of the spectrum that would be available once the digital migration completes. The rest, he projects, should come from the proposed collections from digital access fees and TV licence payment by Nigeria TV households.

Presenting his Ministry's performance report to the nation's governing council, Mr Mohammed emphasized that the Nigerian broadcasting digital switchover is also creating more than 1 million jobs over the next three years. The jobs, according to the government minister, will be added through increased activities in the area of set-top-box manufacturing, content production and advertising services.

On the lingering rollout of the switchover to digital broadcasting, the Minister confirmed that this is completed in 5 states and gave assurances that he will continue to work assiduously to ensure completion across Nigeria.
