South Africa: Smartphones Numbers Up - Fixed Broadband Numbers Down
A recently seen “State of the ICT Sector” report by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has revealed that for the year 2019, smartphones penetration in the South African market was more than 90%. The country also registered a general increase in mobile phone usage.
According to the ICASA report, the estimated total number of smartphone subscriptions in South Africa, with almost 59 million people was 53.38 million in 2019. In the same year, mobile users numbers also climbed from 65 million users in 2018 to 78 millions in 2019.
The report, however, also noted that in 2019, there was a marked decrease in fixed wireless subscriptions, down to about 20% decrease
ICASA said the data used in the ‘State of the ICT sector” report over a twelve months period that ended in September 2019.
