Netflix Announces Its Next African Original - South African Dance Drama JIVA!
Netflix has announced that it has commissioned yet another South African original drama series, JIVA! as part of its growing offering of Netflix African originals.
The series follows the dance trials and tribulations of a Durban working-class girl Ntombi, who fights off rivals and battles family problems to succeed in the country’s cut-throat performing arts industry.
JIVA! will be produced by the Cape Town-based production team Blue Ice Africa with Adam Friedlander, Tebogo Maila and Busisiwe Ntintili as Executive Producers and was created by Busisiwe Ntintili’s The Ntintili Factory who will also serve as showrunner.
The JIVA! cast features Noxolo Dlamini in the starring role of Ntombi, Sne Mbatha, Candice Modiselle, Stella Dlangalala, Anga Makubalo, Zazi Kunene, Given Stuurman, Zamani Mbatha, Ntuthuzelo Grootboom, and the veteran actor Tony Kgoroge.
Netflix describes JIVA! as an energy-packed drama series that follows the colourful life of talented street dancer Ntombi, who while dealing with the demands of a dead-end job, rocky love life and family responsibility, realises that her dance moves could very well be her ticket out of her working-class neighbourhood in Durban. But first, she needs to overcome her fears, beat her competition and sort out the chaos that is her family.
Earlier this week Netflix announced the upcoming second season of the drama series Queen Sono, starring Pearl Thusi and directed by Kagiso Lediga.
