MultiChoice’s Showmax Local Content Offering Climbs To 50%
Showmax has revealed that more than half of its catalogue of movies and TV shows is now local content. This very deliberate shift to local started over a year ago with shows such as The Queen and The River, and more recently with Kwa Mam’Mkhize and Lockdown. Now the latest original from Showmax, Somizi & Mohale: The Union, is breaking rating records.
According to Showmax, local content is a sure way to drive views. The Somhale wedding broke the all-time record for the number of views on its day of debut on Showmax.
Local content doesn’t only get views; it also brings in new subscribers.
Subscription video-on-demand is rapidly growing in popularity in Africa. Showmax now has close to half-a-billion play events of data per year.
Viewing patterns are evolving, with mobile devices becoming the dominant way to consume content.
The CEO of MultiChoice’s Connected Video division, Niclas Ekdahl said that he had expected Somhale to do relatively well, but the response was even more excellent than he’d hoped, and that shows how Showmax’s shift to local content is paying dividends.
He added that the views of local content had gone up by more than 40% in less than a year.
