South Africa’s SABC Secures Rights To Broadcast 2020 Athletics Events

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and Athletics South Africa (ASA) have announced that they have agreed on a broadcast deal to cover the athletics events for the 2020 season.

The agreement was inked at the SABC in Auckland Park earlier this week.

Events to be broadcast include road running events, marathons, as well as track and field.

The national broadcaster issued a statement saying that the marathons that SABC and ASA will deliver to South Africans would include the Comrades Marathon, Cape Town Marathon, Nelson Mandela Marathon, Two Oceans Marathon and the Soweto Marathon.

Aleck Skhosana, ASA’s President, thanked the SABC executives for working tirelessly with ASA to ensure the success of the deal between the parties.

He added that the success of this partnership would return athletics to its original status of visibility, providing athletes sufficient exposure and delivering the sport to the rest of the athletics family.

SABC’s Chief Operations Officer, Ian Plaatjes, said that the public service broadcaster, SABC, plays a significant role in facilitating social cohesion by providing a diverse range of programming which includes broadcasting sports events of national interest.

Plaatjes added that this partnership would cement the national broadcaster’s continuous efforts to work with different stakeholders in fulfilling its mandate.

Both parties said that they are committed to ensuring that citizens are kept abreast and “captivated” by the season’s athletics’ calendar.
