Nigerian Govt Orders NCC To Stop Illegal Deduction Of Data
Isa Pantami, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, has ordered the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) to address the burning issue of illegal deduction of data that is faced by network users in the country.
Pantami gave this instruction during a visit by the leaders of the NCC led by Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman, to his office.
The NCC’s visit was to brief the Communication Minister on the progress that has been made in the implementation of short term targets that had been set for the commission.
In a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle, Pantami said that Nigerian data users are losing money daily, stating that the NCC has the mandate of protecting the consumers of network providers.
According to him, the NCC should also review the cost of purchased data, the issue of illegally registered SIM Cards and compliance with the 2 per cent Call Drop Rate law that was given to telecom operators.
In September 2019, the federal government instructed the NCC to block more than nine million unregistered SIM cards.
Pantami noted that the overwhelming security implication of this irregularity was too risky to ignore, adding that the government has zero-tolerance for actions or inactions that might compromise the nation’s security.
