South Africa: Showmax Filming Second Local Original Comedy Series

Filming began on Monday in Johannesburg on Woke in Progress, Showmax’s second Original scripted comedy series for MultiChoice’s video-on-demand (SVOD) service.

MultiChoice’s Connected Video department announced that it had acquired Woke in Progress as its second comedy series after Tali’s Wedding Diary, and its third original series overall following the drama series The Girl from St Agnes.

Rea Moeti, the Director and Co-creator of Woke in Progress, first pitched the project to Showmax in 2017 and developed it with Emma Lungiswa De Wet. Sipho Sondiyazi and Karabo Lediga then joined the production team at a later stage.

The comedy series that will be rolled out on Showmax on 12 December 2019 is filmed in Johannesburg’s Maboneng where two broke 20-somethings become highly unlikely roommates.

Having just discovered that she’s adopted, the 22-year-old Martie has come to Johannesburg in search of her birth parents; while 25-year-old Amandla is desperately trying to reconnect with the “motherland” after decades of living all around the globe with her political elite father.

Showmax describes Woke in Progress as a combination of CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and Netflix’s Dear White People.

Candice Fangueiro, the Head of Content at MultiChoice Connected Video said that Showmax’s first two scripted Originals - Tali’s Wedding Diary as well as The Girl From St Agnes - both broke multiple records as the most-watched shows in the history of Showmax, so MultiChoice knows that the South African audience is hungry for quality local content.
