Telkom Calls For Investigation Of Vodacom And Liquid Telecom’s Roaming Deal - Reports
Telkom has called for the Competition Commission and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to launch an investigation into the recently-announced roaming deal between Liquid Telecom and Vodacom.
Vodacom said that this roaming deal witah Liquid Telecom would allow it to roll out 5G services this year.
This comes just after Liquid Telecom’s announcement in January that it plans to roll out a wholesale 5G network throughout South Africa in early 2020.
Vodacom’s collaboration with Liquid Telecom will see it running the network on behalf of Liquid Telecom and allowing it to launch 5G services using the company’s reliable 3.5GHz spectrum.
The mobile operator said that 5G services are currently being trialled in preparation for a commercial launch later this year.
Telkom has reportedly raised its concerns with regulators saying that the recent deal between Vodacom and Liquid Telecoms is anti-competitive and would further worsen South Africa’s skewed market structure.
Telkom confirmed that it has called on the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and the Competition Commission to exercise their obligations and review the competition effects of this roaming agreement.
