South Africa: SABC News Channel Increases Market Share And Viewership -Reports

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said that it had increased the market share and viewership of its SABC News Channel (DSTV 404) from 34% last September to 38% in September 2019 on the DSTV pay-TV platform.

The public broadcaster said that it had also witnessed tremendous growth in its IsiXhosa and IsiZulu language bulletins, exceeding the four million audience mark, while the SiSwati and SiNdebele language bulletins also performed well with more than two million viewers.

The Expressions news talk show has maintained its position as the most-watched programme. The public broadcaster’s digital news platforms are reported also to have performed very well with the website SABCNews.com.

It reached more than two million page views in September 2019, an increase of approximately 22% since 2016. When it comes to YouTube Analytics, the SABC News channel achieved the most significant number of views ever.

The national broadcaster’s Group Executive of News and Current Affairs, Phathiswa Magopeni said that the continuous growth of SABC News audiences is a clear sign that the public news service has responded to the needs of citizens.

She added that the performance of the news operation could be attributed to the unwavering commitment of the SABC News journalists and support staff, who continue to work under trying and sometimes very dangerous circumstances to ensure that the voices of South African citizens are amplified.
